Fick et al provide experimental evidence of the recalcitrance of oseltamivir carboxylate (active antiviral metabolite of Tamiflu). This work is significant as models for the use of Tamiflu during a pandemic (see: http://www.ehponline.org/docs/2006/9574/abstract.html) predict high concentrations of the drug in riverwater, having assumed no biodegradation in sewage treatment plants. Confirmation of the recalcitrance of Tamiflu further indicates Tamiflu may present serious environmental and human health concerns upon its release.
