Competing Interests

The authors have read the journal's policy and have the following conflicts: One of the funders, Qteros, was involved in identifying microbial fermentation products presented in Fig 1 using HPLC and GC. SL and TW have equity interest in Qteros. Two patents have been issued for the use of C. phytofermentans in biofuel production or for manipulating genes described in this manuscript to improve the production of biofuel: Leschine S & Warnick TA (2010) Systems and methods for producing biofuels and related materials. U.S. Patent No. 7,682,811 (Issued March 23, 2010); Blanchard J, Leschine S, Fabel J and Petit E (2011) Methods and compositions for improving the production of ethanol in microorganisms. U.S. Patent No. 7,943,363 (Issued May 16, 2011). This does not alter their adherence to all the PLOS ONE policies on sharing data and materials; as detailed the authors have read the journal's policy and have the following conflicts.
