Correction about legal status of reefs in Fiji

Posted by JoshuaDrew on 22 May 2014 at 13:06 GMT

After we published this we received valuable feedback from people in Fiji. We missed the mark slightly when discussing the legal ownership of reefs and subsurface resources in Fiji. While the local people have influence over marine resources the ultimate legal authority and ownership of these resources lie in the hands of the Government of Fiji. We regret missing this legal nuance, and thank our colleagues for pointing this out. We hope our work can help conservation and in order to do that we have to make sure we have the science (and the law) right.
