confirming an inference?

In 2010 Auster and Watling published a short paper in Marine Mammal Science where the presence of beaked whale feeding was inferred from marks seen on the seafloor. The deepest was at 2765 m. At the time that was much deeper than records indicated beaked whales would go. But we could not come up with any other explanation for the shape and orientation of the marks.
