Is Word the best format to exchange sequences?

I am looking at the sequences in Information S2. The green sequence is not described in the caption but appears to be the reporter gene. I am wondering why these sequences have been published as Word documents rather than having them in GenBank format so that they can be imported without errors in most bioinformatics software.
