closeWhole genome duplication versus interspecific hybrid

Very interesting piece of work, but I am curious as to whether it is possible to distinguish a whole-genome duplication event from the formation of a hybrid strain between two related species, as commonly occurs in the Saccharomyces sensu stricto clade for example.

Due to the composition of the mating type locus it seems more likely that it is a WGD and not a hybrid, as in a hybrid, one would expect two different mating type loci (e.g. a and alpha or MAT1-1 and MAT1-2) and we only found one. Also currently there are only two known species in the genus, and for the second species, H. acidophila, some more recent studies claim that it is not even be in this genus.
