closeExcluded pedigrees

I'm hoping that someone associated with this article can clarify what pedigrees were excluded. I am curious whether lineages were excluded if any F1 animal died. If so, couldn't there be a sex-related bias toward death of F1 animals and therefore a bias in the lineages used toward only the successful. In many mammal species males have lower survival rates (as I'm sure the authors and most readers know). Perhaps I misunderstand what lineages were excluded. Thank you. cayers@cfr.msstate.edu

This is a very good question, and one which we considered carefully in planning the analyses. Lineages were NOT excluded if F1 animals died.
