It recently came to our attention that the Academic Editor Michael Petraglia had co-authored one publication with the first author of the article two years before this submission.

The PLOS ONE competing interests policy advises that Academic Editors and reviewers who have had a relationship with the authors of the submission should not be involved in the peer review process. We have therefore asked the Academic Editor Luca Bondioli to evaluate the peer review process of this article. Dr Bondioli has confirmed that he is satisfied that the peer review process was adequate and fully supports the editorial decision for publication.
