Readers interested in this topic ("the Science of Stretch"), should also read a prior paper from my lab "Exposure-Dependent Increases in IL-1b, Substance P, CTGF, and Tendinosis in Flexor Digitorum Tendons with Upper Extremity Repetitive Strain Injury", Fedorczyk et al, J Orthop Res 28:298–307, 2010. It shows increased Substance P-positive axons (nociceptor axons) and even SubstanceP-stained fibrobasts in connective tissues surrounding tendon sheaths that were originally loose areolar connective tissues, but that then become thickened and fibrotic with continued performance of a high repetition high force task for 12 weeks.
