closeSource and copyright of the photographs in Fig. 25 and 26?

Neither of the two figures indicate the source or licensing terms of the photographs, yet since it is unlikely that the authors of the present PLOS ONE article took the photographs themselves, some explanation of the copyright status would be appropriate, so as not to block reuse.
For Fig. 25, a quick web search led me via http://commons.wikimedia.... to http://www.loc.gov/pictur... as the likely source of the image, and I assume it is in the Public Domain.
For Fig. 26, I have not found a likely source, nor do I have an idea about the copyright status. Can you please clarify?
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Charles_Haskins_Townsend_-_journal.pone.0034905.g026-cropped.png , from where it is now used in seven Wikipedia languages to illustrate the article about Townsend. I would like to make sure that this is legally OK, and if it is, I would appreciate if you could provide a higher-resolution version.

Sorry for the oversight. I obtained the Townsend photograph after considerable searching from JSTOR:
Dr. Charles Haskins TownsendAuthor(s): Chapman GrantSource: Herpetologica, Vol. 4, No. 1 (Sep. 17, 1947), pp. 38-40Published by: Herpetologists' LeagueStable URL: http://www.jstor.org/stab... 11/11/2010 16:48
I have no higher resolution image.
The Maury image is from Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w...
Both of these are public domain.
