Cell phone annoyance

Posted by OldFrt on 17 Mar 2013 at 00:23 GMT

When the participants in this study are all puppies, it should not surprise anyone that the results are negligible.
As one who is 72, listening to somebody else on the phone in public is an imposition.
Even worse in a public conveyance or indoor venue

RE: Cell phone annoyance

Thank you very much for the comment.

Our participants were primarily female college students, but we do agree that this 'bystander effect' would probably extend to other people as well. College students are fairly accustomed to overhearing cell phone conversations, yet even they reported more annoyance and had better memory for the one-sided conversation.

We agree that older adults might be more annoyed than younger adults by cell phone conversations, and could perhaps have even greater "bystander effects" on attention and memory.

Best wishes,
Veronica
