Comparative analysis of the rapid motions of biology structures

Although impressive motions of spore dispersal have been recorded in this study, the authors' claim of capturing "the fastest recorded flights in nature" needs further justification. For example, pollen grains catapulted from the flower of the mulberry tree have been estimated to exceed speeds of Mach 0.7 (Sex Plant Reprod, 18, 19-24. 2006). The measured values for time motion, initial velocity, acceleration, and mass specific power output of the mulberry flower surpassed all previous recorded values in biology, in comparison with the data presented by Vogel (J Biosci, 30, 167-175. 2005), and approached the theoretical limits for motion in plants and fungi, according to the modeling of Skotheim and Mahadevan (Science, 308, 1308-1310. 2005).
