Confirmation and extension of previous findings

Posted by sfurness on 30 Oct 2012 at 02:40 GMT

It is important that scientists have the ability to recapitulate and confirm previous findings. This article confirms previously published results (see 10.1124/mol.112.079319) demonstrating the ability of compound 2 to enhance both potency and efficacy of the GLP-1 metabolite 9-36NH2 (previously thought to be largely inactive). Conceptually, the ability to rescue activity from an inactive metabolite has important ramifications for drug discovery and development. In this context I don't understand why the Authors or referees of this paper have omitted reference to the first documented study by Wootten et al. (10.1124/mol.112.079319) which reported this phenomenon and was published online on May 10, 2012. This previous publication also includes data demonstrating physiological effects of allosteric modulation of this metabolite in a rat model which is highly significant in proof of concept for drug discovery.
