Alternatively, if BK channels are present in SAN cell mitochondria, their inhibition might influence heart rate through metabolic mechanisms.

Although this might be possible for paxilline inhibition, iberiotoxin, as stated in the introduction, is membrane-impermeable and hence unlikely to reach and inhibit mitochondrial BK channels, if present. Thus, the iberiotoxin-induced bradycardia shown in Fig. 3 strictly rules out any mitochondrial channel involvement in this novel mechanism.
