Phage display for binding fluorescent dyes

The authors describe a phage display exercise to obtain peptides that recognise a (benz)indolium fluorochrome. Molecular modeling is used to explore potential modes of binding of the selected constructs. Various in vitro and in vivo tests confirm that both phage clones and soluble peptide monomer bind the dye specifically.

The experiment appears to have been extensively controlled with various complementary methods. Most of the data appear appear to be of good quality.

The secondary candidate selected in the phage display appears to be a poly-His sequence. This would be interesting to follow-up, because His tags might be used to make fluorescent labels for imaging.
