Very interesting work, with high potential impact. However, some questions remain. For example, it seems as if this intracellular protein would require bacteria to enter the cytoplasm to be killed. Does it mean that NOD2 would only defend against invading bacteria (Shigella/Salmonella)? If so, how much NOD2 is expressed in non-Paneth intestinal epithelial cells?
Anyway, I enjoyed reading this interesting paper very much.
