Drifts or Microsaccades?

Posted by albeer on 07 Apr 2009 at 13:01 GMT

Our findings and the findings of Murakami and colleagues (Murakami I et al., 2006, Vis Res, 46, 2421-31) show that micromovements of the eye - in particular drifts - correlate with the strength of perceived motion in the peripheral drift illusion. Another recent study (Troncoso XG et al., 2008, PNAS, 105, 16033-8) has shown that the speed of perceived motion in the Enigma illusion correlates with the rate of microsaccades observed prior to a speed change in illusory motion. Although all three studies agree that illusory motion perception involves micromovements of the eyes, they seem to be contradictory regarding what type of micromovements (drifts versus microsaccades) are most associated with illusory motion. This controversy should be addressed by future research.
