Comments on the methodology

Very interesting but limited in its utility by the thermal imaging technique. The data clearly show that the facial skin temperatures recorded are lower than the tympanic measurments, so the technique must be systematically underestimating core temperature. The standard ISO
TC 121/SC32-IEC now outlines the importance of using the inner canthus of the eye as the thermal imaging measurement site due to its internal carotid supply. Ring et al, along with other workers, have used this technique and achieved temperatures consistent with tympanic values. Maybe the reliability of screening would have been better if this technique had been adopted.
