closeThe newly developed unified nomenclature for RF proteins represents a major contribution toward advanced-hybrid technology

In higher plants, understanding the mechanism by which the nuclear and mitochondrial genes called restorers of fertility (RF) suppress the male sterile phenotype carrying deleterious genomes and restore fertility to CMS plants is critical for continued improvements in hybrid technology. Toward this goal, we developed a simplified genetic based nomenclature that automatically catalogues the entire RF gene products in families and subfamilies. This new nomenclature relies upon sequence similarity with previously characterized RFs, thus providing a platform to investigate the members of RF functional diversities across species. This new and unified nomenclature accommodates functional RF genes and pseudogenes, and offers the flexibility to incorporate additional RFs as they become available in future, thus making comparative genomics between species very quick and easily understandable. We use this new nomenclature together with structural protein modeling to reveal that RF gene superfamily encodes currently members of 51 families with highly diverged structural and functional specializations.
