Prion as a ubiquitous multifunctional protein

In this nice article by Laura Manuelidis and coworkers, just published in PLos One, once more Prion appears to be a ubiquitous multifunctional protein. In fact more than a decade ago prion was found to be involved in signal transduction (Mouillet-Richard et al., Science 2000) and more recently in cell adhesion and intracellular signaling (Málaga-Trillo et al PLoS Biol. 2009). Another recent article reveals that prion might impact on miRNA-directed mRNA silencing ( Voinnet et al., Nat Struct Mol Biol 2012). Last, Prion probably acts as an antiviral restriction factor, notably against HIV-1 (Leblanc et al., CMLS 2012; JMB 2004).
But, do we know all prion functions and how can the prion accommodate all these functions ?
This will certainly be the source of more exciting research and debate on prion biology.
