Copper deficiency link to Parkinsonism

Posted by Julie_Royster on 21 Jan 2011 at 20:53 GMT

Bharucha et al (2008, J. Neurology 255:1957-1962, PMID: 19159062) found borderline-low-normal ceruloplasmin levels in patients who developed Parkinson’s disease at a younger age, whereas older PD patients showed higher ceruloplasmin levels equal to those of control subjects. This is consistent with the finding by Davies, Moualla & Brown that copper is necessary for the ferrireductase function.
