The criteria for defining a cluster-specific gene---From the author

Hierarchical clustering of tissues is done using the average distance method (Hamatani et al., Dev Cell, 6:117-131, 2004). We identified genes with the lowest average expression E(G1) within the cluster that can differentiate into cardiomyocytes and genes with the highest average expression E(G2) outside the cluster. We estimated genes which have E(G1) > E(G2) using the False Discovery Rate (FDR < 0.05).
