Interesting and suggestive patterns

Posted by ErikiLund on 15 Aug 2009 at 14:18 GMT

This study has found some interesting and suggestive patterns for rapid morphological change in mammal morphology. As Academic Editor for PLoS ONE, I am also happy that this story got good coverage in media.

The limitations of this fine study, I think, are mainly two: 1. The functional basis of the morphological changes remains to be investigated and understood and 2. We do not know the genetic bases of these changes, i. e. is it evolution or "only" phenotypic plasticity? None of these limitations of this particular study devalue its importance, but show that much work remains to be done on rapid evolution in mammals and other organisms.

No competing interests declared.
