An NGO position that says that our work is 'sad and absurd'

Posted by paolozanotto on 01 Jul 2010 at 22:40 GMT

Here goes the position of the head of a NGO on the paper, that understood that we implied though the media that HCV is "rampant among promiscuous people" (which we did not).

Dear Mr. Paolo Zanotto,

I see that you studied medicine, but believeS to have received from God. It's sad his contempt for YOUR fellow man. Bad for your patients!

Yesterday WE received a communication from the Brazilian Society of Hepatology, challenging your findings and explaining that hepatitis C is not an STD, even the president of SBH BandNews recorded interview to clarify the error in their disclosure.

I'm no doctor, but as an economist to understand statistics and published shows a reading of blunders in the database used, thereby achieving a distortion in the findings in a way that the author wants. For example, if instead of stratifying for less than 5, between 5:50 and more than 50 sex graphic was done according to the income of those infected, that is, those earning up to five minimum wages, between 5:50 and those earning more than 50 minimum wages, the study's conclusion that the minimum wage would transmit hepatitis C.

PloS ONE and now regarded in scientific circles as an advertisement newspaper circulating on the Internet only, like a blog. You only pay US$ 1,350.00 - without any criteria on the article tath will be published. It's good for the ego of researchers, but is not taken into account by the scientific community.

The word "promiscuity" used by the media to sell the issue to the newspaper is often used in a derogatory sense. To label the sexual behavior of a person as promiscuous is considered offensive. I do not believe that this is the ethics taught and adopted at USP, but a place for those who believe God to be a superior.

According to the dictionaries promiscuity (u-i) s. f. Mixture confused and disorganized. Meeting confusing people with predominantly low-class. Thus, published in PLoS ONE is also an act prosmicuity by researchers.

Glad to see that one of the research participants, the biologist Attila Iamarino publishes the blog http://scienceblogs.com.b... rainhadecopas% 3A + +% 28Rainha Red +% 29 the same research, while respecting the ethics and without creating sexual fantasies repressed by placing the following conclusion (full text):

The findings are quite important:

First, we still cannot explain about 40% of our cases, not using injection drugs or had received transfusions before 1993. Practices such as manicure and pedicure, dental extraction and minor surgery were not informative, since all patients had much of them.

Second, the latest viruses are growing more and younger people. These people have more social interactions and more risky behaviors, suggesting that newer subtypes, especially the first, must keep growing and spreading.

Finally, we have very bad news. We do not know how the virus spreads, it is growing and taking advantage of new chances to pass and there is no vaccine available. Even if the treatment is very complicated, not always effective and can have very severe side effects. The best strategy is still prevention, and so we need to better understand how HCV is leveraging social networks.

Fortunately, USP has also ethical research and responsible, which do not stigmatize those infected with hepatitis C to get their 15 minutes of fame. Still my contempt for misleading your statements.
