How to improve conservation of chimpanzees

Because of its geographical as well as its technical expansion, our species, the “naked apes”, as Desmond Morris called us, tend to endanger the other animal species and, among them, the fragile species of the (other) great apes, such as the chimpanzees. Chimpanzees are also “often used in movies, commercials and print advertisements with the intention of eliciting a humorous response”. In the present article, the authors analyzed the likely consequences of this human cultural habit on the endangered status of chimpanzees in the wild. Would this commercial use have a positive or negative effect on the increase of the public's commitment to chimpanzee conservation? In analyzing answers to questionnaires of participants having watched such commercials, the authors show, using all the necessary controls, that the effect is negative. The results thus “firmly support the hypothesis that use of entertainment chimpanzees in the popular media negatively distorts the public's perception and hinders chimpanzee conservation efforts”. At a moment where conservation of great apes is an important issue, this kind of articles seems extremely useful.
