Referee comments: Referee 3 (Albert van Jaarsveld)

Referee 3's review (Albert van Jaarsveld):

This is a great contribution that takes the practice of conservation planning to the next level. The authors demonstrate how the efficiency of conservation land acquisition can be markedly improved by incorporating the cost of land acquisition into the conservation planning framework. Although this principle has been talked about in the literature for some time, this is the first time I have seen this principle demonstrated using actual data. The increased efficiencies are substantial and of important conservation significance.

The manuscript is well written, makes approriate reference to the literature and clearly articulates the consequences of the improved methodology. The figures and supporting material are entirely approriate.

Although I could fiddle with micro-editing - I do not feel this will add substantially to the manuscript and have thus avoided doing so.
