Gloves?

Sorry if it mentioned in the details,were gloves used by the research team when placing the interlocking devices on? Could the bird have followed a reverse scent trail from oils on hand? Were the parts cleaned?

Good question. Gloves were not used, but the parts were reassembled all the time between trials, and all devices were equally touched by the person running the tests, so that smell could hardly have conveyed any useful information.
