Jazz improvisation is cool! But can one really study it? Limb and Braun tackle a subject that has long eluded scientific examination, this being artistic creativity. While neuroimaging methods have been used to study music perception, these investigators examined localized changes of brain state during active production of an improvised score. They report on a particular constellation of brain activity that could be a characteristic of various creative states, including dreaming. This bold new work will doubtless inspire examination of how the brain contributes to other facets of artistic endeavor.
