Topical zinc gluconate for jelly fish stings

Posted by georgeeby on 18 Apr 2013 at 01:10 GMT

I am glad to see academic progress in use of zinc gluconate, a form of zinc that releases mostly ionic zinc, in the experimental treatment of Australian box jellyfish, arguably the most venomous animal in the world. Over thirty years ago, I used topical zinc gluconate powder applied with a bit of water to make a super saturated slurry terminated the pain of jelly fish stings within 15 seconds of application. These jelly fish included the Texas Man-O-war and several other species. The pain, once terminated by ionic zinc, did not return. Jelly fish off Padre Island in Texas are extremely common, ofter lying within a few feet of each other on beaches. Academic research with zinc gluconate products needs to be continued in this field.
