Functional diversity can be defined as a variety of life-history traits

Functional diversity is often defined with three main components, 1) the mean (functional composition) 2) range (i.e. variability), and 3) evenness (relative abundance) of traits values. By using the term "variety" your definition seems restricted to only the range.
