closeStatement is unsupported

If present, this could explain the high transformation efficiency, natural competence, and mating ability of Hfx. volcanii [126] [127].

There is no published evidence for natural competence in any haloarchaeal species and the two references cited, Mevarech and Werczberger 1985 and Rosenshine et al. 1989, do not involve natural competence (rather the authors were investigating mating/conjugation). Nor do the two references for this statement support the high transformation efficiency claim. Additionally, the only existing method for achieving transformation in haloarchaea relies on PEG-mediated chemical competence, implying that the possible DNA secretion system in Haloferax volcanii is unrelated to transformation efficiency/natural competence claims. We believe this statement is incorrect and should be retracted.

Thanks for the comments. I am looking into this in more detail and will post soon when I have checked with the co-authors of our paper.

Upon consultation with my co-authors and with others in the community, we agree with you that our statement was inaccurate. We are going to submit a correction to fix this to say something like "If present, this could explain the mating ability of Hfx. volcani". Do you believe that would be accurate?
