Anyone got references for this well known behaviour? I'd like to read some primary literature on the topic.

We tried to be as careful as possible in citing all of the primary sources involving actual rescue behavior. If you scroll down to the references section, you will see that you can access many of those primary sources directly, a feature of PLoS ONE that we find especially useful.
Or did I misunderstand your question?
