Nature of unexposed equivalent strata

These "footprints" might be explained by differential erosion of a layer containing closely spaced areas of relatively resistant and weak lithology. Petrographic work on this layer, but from a freshly exposed surface (the overlying strata having just been removed by the investigators), might reveal petrographic, geochemical, or merely density differences within the layer, leading to the interpretation that the "footprints" could be manifestations of ordinary differential erosion and have nothing to do with bipedal organisms.
