nicotine consumption?

The authors stated that their results were linked to nicotine consumption while only the number of cigarettes per day was used to distinguish the current, former and non-smokers. From their introduction, "In cigarette smoke, there are more than 5,000 chemicals, including about 70 cancer-causing agents", therefore, the results in the article should be linked to cigarette smoking instead of nicotine consumption if no blood nicotine level or nicotine related biomarkers were used as selecting criteria.
