This is an excellent manuscript that sheds light in one important conundrum of evolutionary microbiology that is the diversity of metabolic pathways found often within well defined phylogenetic clusters. The manuscript is very well written and makes a very interesting contribution with very well grounded conclusions. It also shows the power of genomics when the right organisms are selected to clarify the evolution of prokaryotes. Hopefully we'll many more of these papers in the near future. I enjoyed very much reading the manuscript and recommend without hesitation to publish it in PLoS ONE
