Guillermo Vilas, Number #1 in 1977

Finally we see a study showing what many believed for many years: that Guillermo Vilas was the best player of 1977 (see Table 2 in the paper). In that year, he won 2 Grand Slams (Roland Garros and the US Open), won more tournaments than anybody else, ended at the top of the Grand Prix (points obtained from all tournaments in 1977), and set the then world record of most matches won consecutively. The number #1 was assigned by the ATP computer in 1977 to Jimmy Connors but, on top of the above considerations, Connors lost to Vilas in the two matches they played for that season (the US Open championship match, and a round-robin match at the Masters in New York, played in January 1978).
