Following the publication of this article, it has been brought to our attention that the corresponding author Dr Tanzi and the Academic Editor, Dr Bush, have collaborated on different projects and publications over the last fifteen years, and that they are both members of the Research and Development Advisory Board of Prana Biotechnology.
In line with the PLoS ONE competing interests policy (http://www.plosone.org/st...), we consider this as a potential conflict of interest. We have therefore asked Section Editor Mark Cookson to carefully evaluate the peer review process of this article. Dr Cookson has confirmed that he is satisfied that the peer review process and the decision for publication are adequate.
We are therefore content that the review process was handled correctly by Dr Bush, and that his judgement was in no way affected by his relationship with Dr Tanzi.
