Whatever the merits or otherwise of the h-index, Nature and Science have certainly not "heavily championed" it. In fact, they haven't championed it all. The article in Nature is good balanced reporting and ends with a caution about the use of the h-index to assess the performance of scientists. The article in Science - which is just two paragraphs long - makes the same point.
