The authors have done a genuine tour de force of this topic. The molecular biology is excellently done and covers all the bases. The genomic analysis is very thorough. The phylogenetic analysis is more than comprehensive.

Given the excellent thinking, superb presentation and very clear writing, this paper could have been published without any revisions at all. However I officially recommended “Accept with minor revisions” because this gave the authors the opportunity to consider the minor suggestions below and to incorporate any other minor changes they might wish. A recommendation of “Accept” would have made this much more difficult, due to the speed of the PLoS One publication process.
