Additional Fossil Evidence for C cf simum

Posted by FCotterill on 29 Apr 2010 at 08:56 GMT

The authors overlooked the interesting evidence for occurrence of C. cf simum in central Zambia in the Middle Pleistocene (ca 300 - 200 Ka). The evidence is based on faunal remains associated with the archaeological deposits of Twin Rivers reported on by Clark and Brown (2001). H.B.S. Cooke did the taxonomy.

There is no historical evidence for White rhino occurrring north of the Zambezi river (see Ansell's Mammals of Zambia)

see Clark, J. D. & K. S. Brown (2001) The Twin Rivers Kopje, Zambia: stratigraphy, fauna and artefact assemblages from the 1954 and 1956 excavations. J. Archaeol. Sci. 28: 305-330.
