Diatomic gases hold may hold key to therapy

Excellent paper. Well designed. I am very glad to see that physiologists are looking again at second messenger gases in parturition and and preterm labor. This paper has identified another diatomic gas. Together with a similar study on CO/HO-1 (see our old paper in J Clin Invest 1998 Acevedo and Ahmed), I think the link has been established between CO/HO-1 and H2S pathways for potential treatment for pre-term labor. Acevedo and I had shown that progesterone induced CO production, which could account for its ability to relax the human myometrium. You may want to check if progesterone also leads to H2S production from the myometrium.
