Referee comments: Referee 2 (P.P.Philippov)

Referee 2's review (P.P.Philippov):

This is very clear, interesting and professional work. The only problem, which I had after reading the article as a reviewer, was the absence of any critical notes. It would be of interest to know whether VILIP could play a similar role in another type of cancer such as SCLC.

Thanks very much for your comment. We have shown the VILIP-1 expression is absent in numerous tumor cell lines from sites other than lung (Figure 1). Furthermore, we have recently published that this protein is absent in aggressive squamous cell carcinomas of the esophagus (reference 5). This is mentioned now in the Discussion. The reason we did not include SCLC (apart from the fact that they constitute a small minority of lung tumors) is purely practical, i.e., since these tumors are usually not surgically excised, we did not have enough samples in our Tumor Bank to perform a study with sufficient power to correlate expression with clinical parameters.
