This is a nice, straightforward, microarray study to characterize purified decidual macrophages in humans. The authors compare decidual macrophages to blood monocytes. Using high stringency criteria, they identify a number of interesting genes that are differentially regulated. The gene expression pattern suggest that alternatively activated macrophages dominate at the maternal/fetal interface. In support of this, many of their upregulated genes are are also upregulated in M2 macrophages in a cited study that compared M2 to M1 activated macrophages.
