The influence of the control variables on compensation at 12KKW

Dear Authors,

Thank you for this interesting and provocative assessment of the dose-response effect of exercise on predicted and actual weight loss in post-menopausal women. One intriguing observation is that when actual and predicted weight loss are compared across the exercise groups, uncontrolled for age, ethnicity or baseline weight (table 1), the difference appears minimal (<0.2kg), including the 12KKW group. Whereas, after controlling for age, ethnicity and baseline weight, it appears that with 12KKW, weight loss is significantly impaired when compared to 8KKW (and does not follow the trend seen in 4KKW and 8KKW). These discrepant findings are not discussed. Can you comment on the effect of the control model on the possible compensatory effect seen at 12KKW?
